For a long time now (in fact my whole adult life), I’ve wanted to be a morning person. One of those people who jumps out of bed and doesn’t need an alarm clock, feels fresh and somehow has the energy to exercise before breakfast. But after trying and trying to be ‘that person’, I have to admit defeat. I’m never going to be a bright eyed morning person. I love nothing more than having a lie-in, relaxing in my warm bed.
Having said that, like most people, I do have to get up and motivate myself every morning. The summer months are a little easier - waking up at 7am to streaming sunshine, beaming in through the window is inviting and makes getting up bearable. However, getting up at 7am at this time of year feels like getting up in the middle of the night - and to be honest completely unnatural! Over the years I’ve had to come up with a number of ways to combat my reluctance to get out of bed. Here are my top tips…
My Top Five Tips to Becoming a Better Morning Person
1. Clean up your bedroom - Waking up to a tidy room is far more inviting than opening your eyes to a complete mess.
2. Ten minutes at night will save you twenty minutes in the morning - Get organised before you go to bed at night. Believe me, this will make getting up in the morning far easier!
3. Tune in to your ‘tired time’ and go to bed - This is an obvious one but so important. If you want to get up feeling fresh, you need an early night. My tired time is around 10.30pm (I really need to start listening to my own advice on this one).
4. Have a morning routine - Know what you need to do and create a pattern that you keep to every morning. For example, my routine is; shower, dressed, make-up, get the kids up and dressed, breakfast, brush teeth and off to school. Every day, in that order - it works for us.
5. Get a Lumie Bodyclock - This has been my life saver this winter! It’s an alarm clock with a difference. It creates a gradual sunrise light in the room to wake you up slowly. The brightening light of the clock is a natural cue for you to wake, just as the sunshine does in the summer months. I can honestly say that this has made getting up far easier.
Gift Tip: This would make a great Christmas gift for anyone, who like me, finds it difficult to get up in the dark.
So there you have it, my top tips to becoming a better morning person. What are your morning tips?
I’m not much of a morning person either especially this time of year but agree with your tips about going to bed earlier (not very good at this) and getting organised the night before. That alarm clock sounds like a great way to help you wake up more naturally. #TheList
Great tips, I have always wondered whether one of those clocks would make me more willing to get my sorry arse out of bed of a morning.x
I’m so not a morning person but my children really are 7am would be a lay in for me that clock sounds interesting tho nicer to wake up to than an alarm screaming in your ear! x
Oh no, poor you Amy. Thankfully my two are like me and sleep in. I’d be rubbish if they were waking me up before 7am. xx
Great list hun! I was always a snooze and run around like a mad woman in the mornings, love my sleep too much. Now my new alarm clocks get me up at various times in the morning, No two days seem to be the same! I love the sound of he body clock - might need to put this on my Christmas list! #TheList xxxx
Kat, you’d love it. Such a lovely, calming way to wake up each morning - which is just what i need!!
My bedroom is an absolute pigsty and I don’t ever think I will have the time to make it nice!
I have a sunrise clock and should really start using it- stopped when I didn’t have a ‘need’ to get up but of course just because I am not going to work doesn’t mean I don’t need to get up haha! Great reminders Heledd! x
A Sunshine clock sounds very similar. You should use it, its such a calm, relaxing way to wake up. xx
I used to be this person before Lil G arrived. In the gym for 6.30 and then to the office for 8.30. There is just no chance now. None whatsover. I agree with your tips though and tend to follow most for our morning routine. Since blogging it is the bedtime one which suffers most as I can always find something to write about, jot down or just read others. #TheList x
I know what tou mean. I need to stop taking my phone or tablet to bed. H xx
I have often wondered about those clocks, lots of people swear by them. The lady in the picture on Amazon looks so awfully tidy and jolly, if I woke up looking like that I’d buy two of them hahaa x
I’m really not a morning person at all, but usually a morning coffee does the trick!
#TheList
Ah yes! This does help most people but I don’t coffee. I wish I did!!
I need that bodyclock, love this post, so positive and vibrant-is that your wallpaper, gorgeous if so! #thelist x
Ha ha yes, thats my bedroom wallpaper! Vicky you must get a bodyclock, it’s anazing. Thank you xx
Can I just say - AMAZING wall paper!! I don’t have any tips really as I don’t really mind the mornings (so long as its after 7am 😉 ) but I can definitely, definitely relate to your first tip about having a tidy bedroom, I’m not the tidiest person but waking up to mess makes my head feel ‘messy!’ Really cool post, thanks! xox
Oh thank you! I do love my wallpaper. Yeah, thats true I feel the same if my room’s a mess. xx
I used to think I was a morning person until I had a child!!
I totally agree with doing as much at night as possible. I always do this for the three days I work but when I’m off I tend to be a bit lazy and on those mornings I regret leaving it all to the last minute.

Being proactive the night before really helps me. I’m not sure we’d make it into school on time if i didnt prep the night before. H xx
I do like my lie-ins, but somehow since having Little F (and since he started sleeping through) I feel good getting up in the morning. The time is somehow more precious now. I work full time so I don’t mind getting up early on the weekends (unless I had a rare drink) to spend as much time as possible with Little F. I see so little of him during the week.
The clock seems like a great idea - though we now sleep with eye-patches so not sure it would work 🙂

Hmmm yeah I think they eye mask may provent the benefits of the body clock. I do know how you feel though, my girls are a big motivation for me too xx
That is a good idea! I am a morning person, so am always fine getting up, though I’d agree it’s much more tempting in the sunshine than in the cold and dark!
Oh lucky you!! It’s a daily struggle for me, I’m such a night owl. Thanks for commenting xx
Brilliant tips honey. I am really not a morning person and I hate the winter months when it is dark outside. But I do try and do what I can to motivate myself. I always feel so much better when I get organised the night before too. I might have to follow some of your other tips too. Hugs Mrs H xxxx
Oh the dark mornings are so difficult!! If only we could sleep through the winter months. Without missing christmas of course.
I think the cold makes it so much worse getting up. My house is freezing this time of year like a fridge and it makes it a battle to get out of bed! I used to be a morning person before being a mummy and now don’t feel I am when I need to be! Technology hasn’t helped me in getting early nights recently! Getting more sleep would definitely help! x
They sound really interesting hun, great if it works for you. I must admit 7am would be a lie in in this house 😉 Thanks for much for linking to #TheList xx
I know, I am lucky the girls like to lie-in as much as me. Thank goodness!! xx
