As I’m a big movie fan I thought I’d start a film club, each week highlighting my ‘film of the week’. It might be a film I’m looking forward to seeing at the cinema, an old classic I love or just a random film that I want to rave about. My first film of the week is The Riot Club, which is a film I hope to see soon as it hits the cinemas on Friday.
The Riot Club is based on the Laura Wade play Posh, which is set around Oxford’s Bullingdon Club. The play caused a little embarrassment for David Cameron, as an ‘ex-Buller’ when it was first performed on the London stage. Although, I don’t think anyone will be thinking about the not so cool Prime Minister when they’re watching the gorgeous Max Irons, Douglas Booth and Sam Claflin!
Miles (Irons) and Alistair (Claflin) are first year undergraduates at the same college, both invited to become members of the notorious ‘Bullingdon Club’ ooh no sorry… ‘Riot Club’. Miles is a happy-go-lucky guy from Westminster, who plays down his wealth. Alistair is a Harrow boy who has a long family history at the college. So instantly we know that Miles is the GOOD guy and Alistair is the BAD boy! What we have here is a film that’s a cross between Brideshead Revisited and Lord of the Flies, with lots and lots of boozy parties.
Why is this my film of the week?
I’ve been wanting to see the play since it fist showed back in 2010 and then of course there’s Max Irons who I fell in love with last year when he played King Edward IV in the BBC’s White Queen. From the trailer, I’m expecting lots of very posh, over-privileged boys (or ‘toffs’) behaving very badly….
