Lets face it we all love a good wedding story. If a cover of OK or Hello magazine has a wedding on the cover, it’s sure to catch my eye! And if I see a wedding story on a blog (as I’m trolling through) you can bet I’ll stop to have a quick read and get engrossed in the romance of the day. With this in mind, I thought I’d ‘share the love’ and tell you about my own special day.
The first thing you need to know is that Dom and I had been together for 10 years before he proposed (yes, I know!). So as soon as I had that diamond ring on my finger, I was ready to walk down the aisle. Also, I’m not a very patient person, if I decide to do something I just get on with it - I think you get the picture. In short, I organised my wedding in 4 months, here are the full details…
Dom and I got married on the 28th of November 2009 in Hurst House, Laugharne, West Wales. We had 90 guests in total, my dad is one of eight so the list was never going to be the ‘intimate 50’ I had in mind. My three best friends were my beautiful bridesmaids and I had three little flower girls with me to walk down the aisle.
The theme for the day was very much in-keeping with the venue’s own relaxed, luxury style. We had vintage tea lights and diamanté studs dotted around the venue to add to the glamour, echoing the diamanté studs in my dress, hair and flowers.
I had a very definite style in mind when I went shopping with my mum for THE DRESS. I’d seen Giselle at the Oscars a few years before and was obsessed by the empire line gown she was wearing.
The day went just as I’d imagined it. The guests all arrived at 3.30pm for a drinks reception before our candle lit ceremony at 4pm. I was (and this is a first for me) on time, in my Pronovias dress and silver Louboutin shoes. I felt amazing! My hair was down in big relaxed waves and my jewellery was limited to a diamond bracelet and my grandmother’s wedding ring (which was my something old and borrowed - my dress was new and I had a blue garter).
Dom and I really wanted the reception to be very relaxed and feel more like a party than a wedding. We had another drinks reception with nibbles after the ceremony and had old ‘rat-pack’ and Christmas tunes playing in the background. As soon as the dining room was ready, we all went in to enjoy the meal, which was, as my brother called it ‘a very posh buffet’. Everything was homemade, or home grown - it all looked sensational and tasted even better! Our wedding cake served as the dessert, as it was made up of individual cakes made of white chocolate cups, filled with a square of white chocolate brownie (or blondie), topped with a vanilla mousse and decorated with more chocolate and blueberries. They were delicious and a real show-stealer!
As soon as the speeches were done (after the meal), the party really got going! Dom and I danced for most of the night and made sure we stayed close to one another all night. Many of my friends had told me that they hadn’t actually spent much of their wedding day with their other half, so we made a real effort to stay together as much as possible. The party went on until 5am the next morning and yes, the bar stayed open all that time… Amazing service from Hurst House!
Our song is and always will be ‘She’. I walked up and down the aisle to it being played on the piano (by my very talented auntie) and our first dance was to the Elvis Costello version. Dom even used some of the lyrics in his speech.
My advice for organising a wedding…
Don’t feel pressured to stick to traditions or rules. This is your special day, your (hopefully) one chance to create the wedding of your dreams. I organised our wedding in 4 months because I couldn’t wait any longer. It goes without saying that you have to be organised, a wedding folder is a really good idea and gives you a special keepsake after the event. I can’t wait to pass my folder down to my daughters one day.
Make lists and try not to worry too much. Enjoy the process because IT IS fun - keep in mind that you’re organising a celebration - a truly happy event.
