I’ve been wanting to get this room done for what feels like months – a relaxing space where we can chill out on the sofa and watch some TV – not that we have much time to relax… but hopefully that will change soon. After painting the room a few weeks ago and putting the the Amtico parquet floor down, we were able to bring the furniture in and put some pictures on the wall – and of course hang this amazing show-stopping ceiling light.
So let me take you through the room and explain how we got to this design…
Paint – The first and (for me) most important choice was the wall colour. I’m not normally one for colour, usually sticking to whites and greys (at a push) but I was adamant that this house would have an injection of colour and textures, so I set about finding a colour that wasn’t too dark or too bland. I was after something classic that would create a cosy, elegant room without being too bold or overpowering. After much research we finally opted for a Valspar colour match of Oval Room Blue. A chalky blue that’s rich without being too deep and perfectly suits our 1920s style house.
Sofas – We already had these grey DFS sofas from our previous house, so I always knew they’d be part of the design for this room. They’re pretty classic and very comfortable, basically perfect for a cosy TV room.
Flooring – I’d already had this flooring put down in the hallway and loved it so much that I decided to have the same in this room (instead of sanding the original floorboards back, which was the original plan). The look and finish of this Amtico flooring is fantastic in every way, while also being incredibly durable and easy to clean. We went for Amtico Specia in Royal Oak.
Ceiling Light – Finding a show-stopping celling light was never going to be easy but as soon as I spotted this Atticus 5 light pendant with a gold leaf design on the Socket Store website, I knew it was the one! It’s definitely my favourite item in the snug and gives an extra element of interest and character to the room. I think the space would be pretty bland without this beautiful design feature.
Cushions and Rug – Having decided on my colour schemes I went on a mission to find blue and mustard colour soft furnishings to decorate and brighten up the grey sofas. The plain mustard cushions and rug are from a selection at TK MAXX and the peacock feather design cushions are from La Redoute.
Electric Stove – Now I must admit this came on the back of a big disappointment. The plan was to have a real log burning stove in the fireplace. However, it turned out that the chimney had been completely blocked up and there was no way of getting it unblocked. Having said that, I’m now very happy with this Dimplex electric stove, it’s easy to use and turns on and off in a matter of seconds, which is a big bonus.
Mirror – I bought this round mirror from Zara for the downstairs bathroom but it didn’t really work in there so I decided to hang it here above the fireplace. I’m not sure if it will stay long-term but it will do for now – until I find the right mirror.
Prints and Frames – Most of these pictures and prints were found in antique and charity shops but I also got some from Desenio and the frames are all from Ikea.
We’ve picked up all the other furniture, including the side tables and wooden truck from furniture sales and antique shops locally.
So that’s it, first room done. Now to tackle the other rooms and hallways!
