Marley Spoon – Tasty Recipes in a Box {Creamy Chicken Curry}

Marley Spoon sends tasty recipes and fresh ingredients directly to your door, making it easy to cook a delicious meal at home.

Last week we were sent a gorgeous box of food by Marley Spoon, which is a new meal delivery service.

Marley Spoon sends tasty recipes and fresh ingredients directly to your door, making it easy to cook a delicious meal at home.

It’s subscription based model but you can always decide when you want your delivery. You can even change the frequency, number of portions, food choices and even skip or pause the service whenever you like (within a notice period of six days). Making this service a really good option for busy families or in my case pregnant, over tired mums!

We were sent the family box, which included two meals for four people, which I’d chosen from a selection available on the website the week before. Every week the menu changes making this offering varied, interesting and always healthy.

This was our first meal…

Creamy Chicken Curry – with hearty chickpeas and spinach

What we were sent:

20g garam masala

1 onion

2 cloves of garlic

2 tins of chickpeas

200g of fresh spinach

2 large chicken breasts

450g Greek yogurt

"Marley Spoon sends tasty recipes and fresh ingredients directly to your door, making it easy to cook a delicious meal at home."

Method

1. Peel and finely slice the onion and garlic. Cut the chicken into bite size chunks and drain the chickpeas.

2. Heat some oil in a medium size saucepan on a medium heat. Add the onions and fry for 4 mins, until slightly softened and golden. Next add the garlic and garam masala and cook for a further minute.

3. Add  the chicken chunks and increase the heat to high, fry for 2mins. Then turn the heat back down to medium and add 1tsp sugar and 100ml of water. Cook for 5-8mins with the lid on until the chicken is cooked through.

4. Add the chickpeas and spinach to the pan. Warm through for 2-3mins, until the spinach is wilted.

5. Turn the heat down low and fold in the yogurt. Then quickly remove from the heat, season generously with salt and pepper and serve.

My Verdict

My husband and I really enjoyed this creamy, yet healthy curry and I’ll definitely make it again for us. However, it was a taste too far for the girls, who weren’t as impressed with the unfamiliar flavours.

Marley Spoon, is a professional, high end service. I was really impressed with the packaging and the detailed recipe cards. Everything within the box was of the highest quality and I would definitely be tempted to sing up.

Style The Bump – Maternity Wear Tips and Favourite Buys

Maternity wear is massively hit and miss. It’s so easy to slip down the ‘frumpy’ route and end up looking uncool and so far removed from your usual style, it’s depressing. Bad prints and oddly fitting tops and dresses can leave you looking far bigger than you actually are.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not ashamed of my bump, in fact I’m very proud of it but I don’t want to look like I’m wearing a ‘tent’ – especially at the end when everything is so heavy and uncomfortable you already feel like a whale.

Having been pregnant twice before, I thought I’d share my Top Maternity Wear Tips and Tricks. This is how to successfully style your bump without the frump.

1) Buy good basics – maternity vests, t-shirst and long-sleeve tops. These are inexpensive and will help you create ‘maternity outfits’ using your current clothes, as they can be worn under open cardigans, shirts and jackets. I’ve got some fab plain black and white ones from Peacocks maternity clothes for as little as £5.

2) Invest in some good thick black maternity leggings. They’ll help support your bump and again allow you to wear baggy tops and jumpers you already own, without you tummy popping out.

3) Have look on eBay, Mumsnet, Netmums and NCT sites for people selling their old maternity clothes. In most cases you don’t know what you’re buying but for as little as £10 you can end up with jeans and dresses that will help you through the period in a very inexpensive way. Usually the bags are divided into sizes so you know that the clothes will fit.  This is also a good tip when you want to make some money after you’ve finished with your pregnancy clothes.

4) These Belly Belts from Love Your Bump are great for making your favourite ‘usual jeans’ last a lot longer. They expend the middle with the use of buttons and elastic, it’s such a simple but genius idea. I’m currently wearing these every day. There are three different sizes in each pack so you can use them well into your pregnancy. Just make sure you wear a long top!

5) Invest in a couple of good maternity jeans, you won’t need more than two in my experience (as I just live in comfortable leggings) but every now and again you’ll want to get dressed up and wear some jeans. I really like these ones from Jojo Maman Bebe and Serephine have some cool looking ones too! If your budget stretches a little further Isabella Oliver have amazing ones! I’ve also been very impressed by my Peacocks maternity jeggins, which are only £14.

6) Go through your current wardrobe and see what you’ll be able to make use of, you’ll be surprised what can work. I’m currently wearing my non maternity Zara jumpers and they’re prefect!

7) Don’t buy too much maternity wear, buy well and you’ll be fine with some maternity leggings, basic plain tops and vests and a couple of pairs of jeans. I’ve also got a couple of good maternity jumpers and knits to see me through the cold winter months.

8) Keep your style and usual ‘look’ by accessorising with your favourite scarves, hats, sun glasses and lipstick. Just because your pregnant does not mean you have to lose your identity.

9) Be comfortable, so don’t be afraid of popping on your husband/ partner’s pyjama bottoms and old t-shirts at the weekends and evenings. My husband always fakes annoyance but I know he doesn’t mind and he always says I look better in them than he does ; )

10) This is just my opinion but once your bump gets big, usually from around 25 – 27 weeks, stop wearing lose clothes and opt for figure hugging comfortable jerseys. This is the point that it’s so easy to look like you’re wearing a tent. Show off and be proud of that amazing bump and oddly enough you’ll look smaller than if you were wearing a flowing top or dress.

Here are a few of my favourite maternity wear purchases and styles…

As you can see, this is probably one of the most important captured moments of my life. The moment my father gave me away and I married my best friend and love of my life.

Our Weekend in Pictures {Blogfest, Sonos and Party Dresses}

This weekend in pictures is very much a tale on two (or maybe even three) halves. On Saturday I went along to Mumsnet’s Blogfest blogging conference as a guest of the lovely people at Arla Big Milk. Arla Big Milk is a full fat, vitamin enriched milk created specifically for children, which I featured in a post earlier this year.

This was my second time at this event, I remember feeling so nervous and scared last year – but by now I’ve made so many friends within the blogging community that it feels more like a fun day out with my mates than a daunting conference. I spent most of the day catching up with my favourite bloggers and attending seminars on YouTube, in the hope of picking up some tips and tricks to enhance my growing channel.

our.weekend.in.pic.nov.5While I was off enjoying myself at Blogfest, the rest of my family were having their own day out in Shoreditch, where they walked around admiring the amazing street art and then attended an event at the very cool Sonos Studios, where they learnt to ‘build a beat’ and got to test out the new Sonos Play:5.

our.weekend.in.pic.nov.4 our.weekend.in.pic.nov.3

Sonos has to be one of my husband’s favourite brands of the moment. He’s literally been talking about their speakers and sound systems for the past ten (maybe more) months. So when this invite came up in my inbox, I knew that it would be something he would love to do.

our.week.in.pics.Nov.2

After a long lie-in on Sunday morning (as I was feeling exhausted after being on my feet all day at Blogfest),  we all got ready to attend a birthday party. It was my friend’s little boy’s first birthday, so it was an important day, that I’m so glad we could share with them. The girls wore their new Question Everything dresses, which are these 100% cotton, hand smocked, gorgeous little designs.

All of their dresses are hand-made by a local community of ladies based in the Philippines (where founder Angie Adams originates) – this enables them to earn a living from their skills. Also, Question Everything donates a percentage of its profits to Childhope Asia Philippines- a charity for the care and education of street children in the country.

My Top 5 Christmas Traditions – Vlog Club

vlog club header

This month’s Vlog Club is all about Christmas, which is without doubt my favourite time of year! As a child my mum always made Christmas so special and magical for my brother and I – and now I try to do the same for my children.

Of course we put up a Christmas tree and decorate the house every year. The girls also have an advent calendar and we always go to Wales for Christmas to celebrate with my family. These are our big traditions but over and above that I have these Top 5 Christmas Traditions, that make Christmas for me…

Aden + Anais – I’m a little obsessed

a beautiful aden and anais swaddle

Over the last week, I’ve started to get a few things for the baby. I’m now coming up to six months and feel like I need to start preparing for our big arrival. I know that the run up to Christmas will be hectic and once we’re into the new year, I’ll be securely in my third trimester.

The first things that I’ve got are these beautiful swaddle muslin sheets from aden + anais. They are a brand I have loved for such a long time and now I finally have an excuse to buy a couple of bits!

These pretty and super soft muslin sheets are almost too good to use in the traditional way (to burp the baby) but as they are so big they can be used in so many other ways including:

– Swaddling the baby (which I really want to get into this time round)
– Sun shade over the push chair
– Feeding cover-up
– A sheet to place the baby to lie down on

aden + anais have a large range of different designs and products on their website. In fact, they have so much choice that I found it difficult to decide what to go for – especially in my over excited hormonal state!

In the end, I went for these gorgeous designs. The first set are from their latest collection called “wild one” which are made from their super soft bamboo muslin fabric…

I just love these aden and anais muslin baby swaddle sheets.

And the second set I went for was the iconic “jungle jam” range, which feature cute cartoon giraffes and monkeys.

I just love these aden and anais muslin swaddle sheets.

What I love most about aden +anais is how cheerful and eye catching their prints are. The colours are just beautiful and the fabric, especially the bamboo ones are incredibly soft and perfect for a baby’s soft skin.

Another feature that makes theses muslin sheets essential, is that they can be thrown into the washing machine and tumble dryer – and apparently the more you wash them, the softer they become!

My aden + anais Wish List

My obsession will continue next year, when aden + anais launch their beautiful new range in collaboration with Disney. This has to be my favourite ever Disney collaboration! They’ve done it so well, as the prints are beautiful and very much in keeping with the aden + anais style.

They’ve done three sets; Bambi, Winnie the Pooh and Jungle Book, which are all gorgeous.

If I had to pick my favourite it would have to be the more ‘girlie’ Bambi print but I also love the map design of the Winnie the Pooh set.

aden.and.anais.3

For me the other must-have items from aden + anais have to be the baby bath wrap, which literally wraps the baby up in a beautiful bundle after a bath. As well as their versatile and beautiful dream blankets!

Yes, as I mentioned in the title – I’m a little obsessed! I have a feeling I’ll be revisiting this website a lot over the next few months. Especially once the Disney collection is available in February.

My Captured Moment #46 {A Picture Link-up}

Welcome to My Captured Moment, a weekly linky where I share my favourite ‘Captured Moments’ and invite you to do the same.

This week ‘My Captured Moment’ was taken last Thursday. It was ‘Superhero Day’ at preschool to raise money for Children in Need and Poppy decided she wanted to go as…. can you guess? Yes, she dressed up as Super Girl and looked amazing and so cute!!

Time to Learn & Win a Timex Watch

Kids watches and time to learn.

Lili recently came home from school and announced that she is in the process of learning how to tell the time. Part of me was surprised that she was old enough to be learning to tell the time (I’m not sure why, because she is five and knows her numbers) but she was so excited that of course we had to be enthusiastic and get involved.

These Lorus kids watches from watchshop.com are great for teaching your little ones to tell the time, they’re clear and include the hours as well as the minutes past and to the hour.

If your child is coming up to this age, I’d recommend these fab watches as a perfect Christmas present or stocking filler. My girls are thrilled with them!

Why Sunday is our Fun Day!

Why Sunday is our Fun day

Come Monday morning I often find myself singing the eights classic ‘Manic Monday’ by The Bangles. There is so many truths in that song, that really ring true for me.

“Just another manic Monday, wish it was Sunday, that’s my fun day…”

It always makes me think back over the weekend and consider whether we made the most of our “fun day”.

With this in mind, I thought I’d make a little list of my top ten favourite things to do on a Sunday…

1. Go out for lunch. We love trying new places to eat and the girls are now old enough to sit still and make this an enjoyable family experience. Our ‘usual’ favourite places include; Carluccuo’s, Prezzo, Byron, Wahacca and Wagammama.

southbank.8

2. Visit a Nation Trust venue. Last Christmas we got given National Trust membership as a gift from my parents and since then we’ve really made the most of it. Every single one we’ve visited has been breathtakingly beautiful and given us a great family day out.

3. Pretend to be tourists in London. We often pop on the train into London and walk around, just taking in the sights. Basically pretending we’re on a little holiday or city break.

southbank.5

4. Crafts with the girls. Both of my girls love play doh and painting (I get so much inspiration from Pinterest). This weekend they spent an hour or so designing t-shirts using fabric pens.

5. Movie day. On a rainy weekend day we simply grab a blanket or two, make some popcorn and spend the day snuggled on the sofa. The perfect rainy day activity!

staroftheweek2

6. Online shopping. This is a big Sunday night treat for me (and a must for Christmas shopping), because real shopping with children and an easily bored husband is just not fun!

7. Go to the park. No matter the season, or the weather (as long as it’s not raining) we always have a great time at one of our local parks. The girls love being outdoors, swing on a swing, climbing trees and running through leaves.

Pumpkin.patch.4

This weekend we ventured out to Richmond Park and had a good run around in the autumn air. I had this new Joules fur lined parka coat to test out, which is the perfect ‘Sunday afternoon’ autumn/ winter coat. It’s warm, comfortable and super stylish. I especially love the fake fur hood.

my new joules fur lines parka coat my new joules fur lines parka coat

8. Cook/ bake up a storm. The girls really enjoy helping in the kitchen, so we often make cookies, brownies or pizzas on a Sunday afternoon. I’ve always enjoyed a little relaxing Sunday afternoon bake-off and how it’s great to have the girls join in – although I must admit, it’s not quite as relaxing.

cooking up a storm in the kitchen

9. Curl up with a laptop and read some blogs. I love sitting back and catching up on all my favourite blogs, and Sundays always seems to be the best day to do this. I can spend hours going from one site to another, while the girls usually watch cartoons next to me.

10. Beach walks and fish & chips. No matter the weather, we always enjoy a walk along the beach followed by fish and chips on a bench nearby.
