Me and Mine – July {A Family Portrait Project}

me and mine

It’s the end of another month and now officially summer! Well it’s the summer holidays at least, even if the weather doesn’t reflect it… but I won’t dwell on the weather, let’s keep things positive! We’ve just come back from a week in the South of France where the weather was warm and we relaxed and spent seven blissful days playing in the pool, on the beach and at the lake. I’ll be posting more about our holiday in the next few days, so please keep an eye out. If you follow me on Instagram, you will have already seen quite a few pictures – I can only apologise for the holiday spam. Normal level of pictures will now resume.

This month has also seen Lili finish her first year at school and wave goodbye to her school friends for the summer months. She had a glowing end of year report and I honestly couldn’t be more proud of the kind, sweet-hearted girl she’s turning into. I can’t wait to spend the next few weeks with my two girls, the three of us together with no interruptions from school or nursery. In September Lili will be going into year 1 and Poppy will start pre-school, so things will be very different, which makes me want to make even more of this special time we have together.

These pictures were taken on our last night in France…

Having Lili home to play with everyday!

Have a good month!!

Welcome to My Captured Moment, a weekly linky where I share my favourite ‘Captured Moments’ and invite you to do the same.

This week my ‘My Captured Moment’ is a series of three shots that we took of Lili when she was just a week old. This means that shockingly, these pictures are now over five years old!! I just love all the different expressions she gave us.

Is Friday Your Wine Day? – Wine Tips From Provence

Okay, it’s no big secret, I’m not a big wine drinker but most of my close friends and family are. Let’s face it, most grown adults enjoy a bottle of wine on a Friday night. In a way, I wish I did too. There’s something so indulgent and lovely about the thought of having a glass of wine to relax and unwind at the end of the week.

However, this means I get very confused by all the different varieties of wine at the supermarkets, especially when I need to buy a bottle as a gift. I usually grab the first bottle of red or white (with a nice looking label, that’s usually on offer) and head over to the check out counter, hoping for the best.

For me the world of wine has always been a bit intimidating. With so many bottles, brands, and endless styles of wine, where do you start?

Here is some information I recently picked up on holiday in Provence – one of the main wine regions of the world.

wine, red wine, white wine, wine day

In very general terms there are four categories of wine – Red, White, Rose and Sparkling. Apparently, there are no real rules when it comes to pairing wine with food or occasions – anything goes it’s all down personal taste. If you (like me) don’t have a preference, make sure you know what the person you’re buying for likes.

1. Red Wine

Red wines are made from blue/ purple coloured grapes and get their deep colour from the extended amount of contact between the juice and the grape skins.

The most famous wines from France, Italy and Australia are red wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Pinot Noir or Shiraz grapes. They can have a light body or be fuller-bodied, with a variety of different tastes from dry to sweet, and fairly fruity in flavour to spicy and sometimes even savoury.

I will often buy my husband and mother a bottle of good red wine for their birthday and Christmas, as I know exactly what they like and know that they will appreciate the gesture. In contrast they know to buy me a good bar of chocolate!

2. White Wine

Famous white wine grape varieties include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Riesling.

White wines tend to focus on acidity and the fresh flavours of white grapes. They can be dry or sweet and range from fruity to floral, and spicy to sweet.

3. Rosé Wine (or Blush)

Rose wine is usually made from red wine grapes with just a short exposure of the grape skins to the juice (which is why the colour and flavour is not as deep). These wines are made all over the world and offer a refreshing, chilled alternative to red wine – especially in the summer months.

rose wine, blush wine, wine day

If I’m honest, I do enjoy the odd glass of chilled Rosé on a warm evening.

4. Sparkling Wine

Champagne and sparkling wines are popular for their bubbly nature and are perfect for any celebration. Made from red and white wine grapes, sparkling wines can be white, rosé, or even red. The bubbles come from a second fermentation that captures the carbon dioxide (or bubbles) under pressure. Sparkling wines range in style from very dry to sweet, and super bubbly to a light fizz.

sparkling wine, wine day

You can learn more about wines with Tesco’s online Wine Magazine, which includes video content and interactive features to help you grow your knowledge and understanding of the wonderful world of wine. You may also want to join their wine club, if you’re a big fan.

Extra Tip:
Ignore the idea that bottles with screw caps are not good wines. More and more great wine makers are switching away from corks, to avoid ‘corking’ the wine and spoiling its taste.

Who am I now {A Year On…}

who am I now

This time last year I answered a series of questions in a post called WHO AM I NOW? I had just finished working and was starting my new life as a stay at home mum and blogger. I thought it would be fun to revisit the same questions (although I have changed a few) and see how my answers compare a year on…

1. Do you have any pets?
No – still no pets!

2. Name 3 things that are physically close to you.
My MacBook, my camera and the kitchen table.

3. What’s the weather like right now?
Cloudy and cool.

4. Do you drive? If so have you crashed?
No I don’t drive and a year on, I still haven’t started my lessons – not good!

5. What time did you wake up this morning?
8.30am – thank God, my girls like to sleep in!

6. What did you eat for supper last night?
Pasta with tomatoes and garlic.

7. What was the last movie you saw?
It’s Complicated – with Meryl Streep. It was on TV last week and happens to be one of my favourite films of all time.

Good morning to my husband who left for work before I was awake.

9. What’s your ringtone?
Just a generic ringtone, nothing fancy.

10. What was the last country you visited?
We’ve literally just got back from France.

11. What is your favourite take-away?

14. How many siblings do you have?
One amazing brother.

15. Do you have a desktop computer or a laptop?

16. How old will you be turning on your next birthday?

18. Do you colour your hair?
Not these days.

19. What are you are planning on doing today.
Enjoy a movie with my girls. I think they want to watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

23. Have you ever had an all-nighter?
Yes but a long time ago!

Two beautiful daughters.

25. What is your favourite cocktail?
Watermelon vodka martini

Okay, not many changes but it is interesting to see some differences. My life is definitely a lot more chilled and laid back these days. I love being at home with my girls and I’ve been lucky to have got some freelance work from home, which means the money worries that I had at the back of my mind this time last year have gone away.

Thanks for reading xx

3 Essential Summer Cocktails – With A Fruity Twist

summer cocktails

This is guest post by James Matthews from Just Miniatures, who is an expert in mixing delicious cocktails. As you may already know I’m not big into wine – but cocktails… now that’s a different story! And these three summer cocktails sound absolutely amazing.

There’s nothing more summery than sitting with the sun on your face and a cocktail in your hand. The best cocktails for hot weather are more often than not fruity takes on classic recipes.

Here are three recipes to get you through the summer…

Equipment you’ll need
A Blender
A Shaker
A Strainer
Cocktail glasses

1) The Daiquiri

Supposedly invented by an American mining engineer in Cuba in the midst of the Spanish-American war around 1902. It was one of the favourite drinks of Ernest Hemingway and John F Kenned, and became a widely drunk beverage in the 1940s. Originally made without any fruit, it’s rare to find a cocktail bar that will serve it like this now. Instead you’ll find it created with a range of different fruits, from the ever popular strawberry daiquiri to blueberry or banana.

Daiquiri

Mango Daiquiri Recipe

Ingredients:
1 mango
3 parts rum
1 part lime juice
2 tsp sugar

Method:
A beautifully simple cocktail, it’s fruity and gorgeous. Simply combine a chopped up mango, lime juice, sugar and rum in a blender until smooth. Pour over a glass of crushed ice.

For different flavours, simply replace the mango with your desired fruit.

2) The Margarita

The margarita has so many claims to its origins that no one is entirely sure where it came from. Most agree that it was born in the 1930s, but the first known publication of a margarita recipe is in the December 1953 issue of Esquire. It is usually served in a specific margarita glass, which looks like an upside down sombrero.

summer cocktails

Apricot Margarita Recipe

Ingredients:
1 part tequila
1 part apricot juice
½ part triple sec liqueur
½ part lime juice
1 lime wedge
Salt/sugar

Method:
Place salt (or you can use sugar if a salt rim isn’t to your liking) in a shallow dish, rub the lime wedge around the rim of your glass, and invert it and place in salt/sugar. The salt/sugar should stick to the rim.
Simply place the tequila, apricot juice, triple sec and lime juice in a shaker and shake well. Pour over ice and garnish with a lime, lemon or orange slice if desired.

The Caipiroka is a variation of Brazil’s national cocktail, the Caipirinha, and is basically the same but instead of cachaça, it contains vodka. For a long time it was unheard of outside of its country of origin, but it has slowly gained popularity in America and Europe.

Vladivar

Watermelon Caipiroska Recipe

Ingredients:
5 parts vodka (or if you want a Caipirinha, use cachaça)
2 parts sugar syrup
8 quarters lime
Watermelon puree
Mint leaves
Crushed ice

Method:
Muddle the lime, mint leaves and sugar with a wooden spoon in a shaker. Add the watermelon puree (add as much as you like depending on your taste), vodka/cachaça and ice and shake. Pour into a tumbler and serve.

My Captured Moment #29

Welcome to My Captured Moment, a weekly linky where I share my favourite ‘Captured Moments’ and invite you to do the same.

This week’s my ‘My Captured Moment’ is a few shots we took on Sunday. As you can see it was a hot day and the girls were having fun in the garden. My husband extended the slide with some strips of plastic from an old inflatable and showered the whole thing in water. Sometimes, these little things create the most fun. That night the girls told me that they’d had the ‘best day ever’ and wanted to do it again soon!

Holiday Essentials and Poolside Must-Haves

holiday.essentials.7

As I may have mentioned a few times, we’re off on holiday in the morning and thought I’d share with you some of the things I’ve packed in my case! These are all little bits that will make my holiday a little more special as they’re new and have that feeling of being ‘holiday essentials’. Although, if I’m honest my main holiday essentials this year are my husband, girls, camera, iPhone and MacBook. Call me crazy but I find writing and editing pictures really relaxing so wouldn’t be without my camera and laptop.

So what other little bits and bobs have I packed? We’re staying in a beautiful house in Provence, with it’s own swimming pool, so most of our time will be spent in and around the garden and pool – especially as the temperature is looking like it’s going to be in the high 30s! I can imagine, I’ll find myself a little spot in the shade and try and relax as much as possible with a five and a two year old. Here are my poolside essentials.

poolside, holiday, pool, bikini, swimsuit

1) I love this bright pink body sculpting swimsuit by Speedo! Admittedly I normally shy away from bright colours but I couldn’t resist this one, the colour’s amazing and screams holiday!

2) This massive sun hat from Gap is a must to make sure my face is shaded all day. I do love the sun but I also know it’s not my friend, especially as I’ve started to notice those first signs of ageing!

3) My book of choice this year is The Temporary Bride by Jennifer Klinec. It’s based on true events that Jennifer found herself in when she travelled  to Iran to learn how to cook traditional recipes and fell into a forbidden love affair! Sounds amazing.

4) P20 SPF50+ will be sprayed on every day. As I’ve already mentioned the sun is not my friend and I’d hate to come back with burnt/ damaged skin.

5) Yes, I’ve also got a new bikini!! Again this one is a sculpting bathing suit but this time I’ve gone for a more neutral colour. I saw this one by David from Patricia Eve and knew it would be perfect for my holiday.

Now of course we will also be spending some time sightseeing and walking around the local villages. Here are some more holiday essentials I can’t wait to pull out of my case…

holiday.essentials.5

1) This beautiful cover-up by Iconique from Patricia Eve can also double as a dress with a plain white slip underneath. I love the colours on this and how amazing are those sleeves?

2) I’ve also got these new tan gladiator sandals from Daniel, which are made of the softest leather and are so comfortable.

You may have noticed that I’ve included some beauty essentials in the pictures above but they didn’t come out too well, so here is a round up of what I’ve got in my vanity case…

beauty, holiday, molton brown, time bomb

1) A Time Bomb ‘Sun-Kisses Weekender Kit’, which includes cute mini versions of their award winning products; Holiday in a Bottle (that adds an instant sun kissed boost to your skin), Glory Days Day Cream, Take-Off Time Cleansing Cream and Take-Off Time Polishing Pads.

2) Molton Brown Japanese Orange Body Wash – I love taking a new fragrance away with me on holiday and this year I’m opting for this shower gel. The hope is that the scent will forever remind me of this holiday.

3) Philip Kingsley Swimcap – this is SPF for your hair and protects against the damaging effects of the sun. It also protects against the drying and damaging effects of chlorine and salt water. A must-have as I know I’ll be in that pool most days.

4) Cocoa Brown 1 Hour Tan Mousse – As I’ve already mentioned I will spend most of the holiday in the shade or under a massive hat, so my healthy tan will come from this bright pink can. It’s an easy, quick, no mess way to give you than sun kissed glow.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this little peek into my holiday case. Now I’d better get to bed, we have an early morning flight to catch!

My Travel Essentials For Kids…

travel essentials with kids

Tomorrow we will be flying to the South of France for our family holiday. We’ve booked a beautiful looking holiday home and are looking forward to a week of fun, playing in the pool and seeing what the area has to offer. There are so many positives to this kind of holiday, you get a whole house to yourself and you don’t have to share a pool, however there is no ‘kids club’ or babysitting facilities so entertaining the kids will be on us.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love spending time with my girls and the whole point of a family holiday is for us to spend time together but it can get very testing, especially when you’re travelling and when you just want to relax. So here are a few of my travel essentials for kids…

Travelling.with.kids

1) Tablets – I’m not suggesting the girls will spend all week playing on these but I know that they will make flying a lot easier. I download educational games as well as episodes of their favourite shows including Topsy & Tim, Alphablocks and Charlie & Lola. We have an iPad2 and a Gemini D7 from Three.

2) A Power Charger – This Stripe TurboCharger hold up to 12 full charges for tablets and mobile phones and is great for when you need to charge up a device on the go. It’s compatible with apple and android devices too!

3) Colouring and Activity Books – I always buy new books for the girls before we go away, these come in handy throughout the holiday, when they need a little down time or want something to do while we’re sat in a restaurant. I love these ones by Usborne, especially the ‘100 things for little children to do on a journey‘ wipeable cards, which means they can be reused again and again!

4) High SPF Cream and Clothes – Children’s skin is so much more sensitive to the sun, so it’s important that they are always fully protected. I use P20 Factor 50+ spray on the girls, as well as Sunuva swimwear, which again has an SPF of over 50.

5) Last but by no means least I have these little travel kits ready to give the girls tomorrow morning, as we leave for the airport. They were put together by Travelzoo and include a cute soft toy, a first aid kit, an earphone adaptor, some small colouring books, crayons, wet wipes and some sweet treats for the plane.

With all this, I hope we’ll be all set for a week on fun!

Graduating Reception, Thank You and Goodbye. School’s Out For Summer!

That’s it school’s out for summer!! I haven’t had this feeling in years, that feeling of sheer excitement and optimism for the next six free weeks of no routine or daily grind. That’s because it’s been a long time since I was at school, longing for the six week summer holiday to arrive, and this was Lili’s first school year.

graduated, graduation, thank you, graduating reception

Yesterday my big girl graduated from her Reception class. When she goes back to school in the Autumn, she’ll be going into year 1 and no longer one of the babies of the school. She’ll be expected to do more work and homework, and there will be less ‘learning through play’ – it marks the next stage in her educational journey.

Looking back on this past year, I feel so grateful for so many things… Lili’s settled into school life beautifully, enjoys going every day and she’s made some wonderful friends. The school is literally a 2 minutes walk from our house, which is useful as we seem to be rushing down the road every morning! More than anything I’m grateful for the kind, lovely teachers that she’s had this year. Both her teacher Miss C and teacher’s assistant Mrs H have been simply amazing and I know that Lili will miss them next year.

To say a big thank you, Lili and I wanted to get them a little something, a little memento that will let them know that we appreciate all the handwork and patience they’ve both shown over the year.  As I was wondering what to buy, I was sent an email by Merci Maman Boutique which included these sweet personalised charm bracelets, which they engrave for you. Instantly I knew I’d found the perfect gift, simple, affordable, thoughtful and personalised – in short IDEAL!

So I placed an order for two pink (colour chosen by Lili – of course!) bracelets with a gold heart shaped pendant and had a simple ‘Thank you’ engraved on one side and ‘from Lili x’ on the other. We were both really pleased with them when they arrived, I do hope the teachers like them as much as we did.

thank you, merci maman, graduating reception thank you, merci maman, graduating reception

Now, let the summer fun begin!!

My Captured Moment #28

Welcome to My Captured Moment, a weekly linky where I share my favourite ‘Captured Moments’ and invite you to do the same.

This week’s my ‘My Captured Moment’ is a shot of me and my husband on a walk home through our local park, after a rare date night the other week. Last Friday was sixteen years to the day since we first met at a mutual friend’s wedding and tomorrow will be sixteen years since our very first date. It’s hard to believe that we’ve been together all that time, where have the years gone?

We did live apart for the first five years – me down in London, while he lived in Staffordshire. We made it work by seeing each other every weekend and going on as many holidays as we could afford. We’ve now lived together for over eleven years and been married for five and a half years.

I feel so lucky to have found this man, he is my soul mate and best friend. We may have the odd argument – and when we do, he has the ability to make me more angry than anyone else I know but I wouldn’t change him for the world.
